Adam Lambert and Queen kick off much-anticipated Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace

The BBC’s Party at the Palace kicked off with a spectacular appearance from Adam Lambert and Queen on Saturday night.

Adam, who took the place of lead singer Freddie Mercury, appeared on stage in front of a row of Palace officials playing drums and began belting out We Will Rock You for their opening number.

It came 20 years after guitarist Brian May performed God Save The Queen on Buckingham Palace’s roof during a show marking the Golden Jubilee in 2002.

The singer, 40, showed off his sensational sense of style in a sweeping black jacket embellished with gold stitching, which he paired with black trousers and a shirt as he took to the stage.

During their opening number, Brian May incredibly appeared up from behind a golden stage on a huge platform as he rocked the guitar solo while Roger Taylor put on an incredible show behind the drums.

After beginning with a rocking start, they then went on to sing Don’t Stop Me Now, getting the crowd of 22,000 people clapping and cheering, before going on to belt out We Are The Champions.

The line-up also includes Diana Ross, Alicia Keys, Nile Rodgers, Andrea Bocelli, Duran Duran, Bond composer Hans Zimmer, Ella Eyre, Craig David, Mabel, Elbow and George Ezra.

Before the concert began, the Queen hilariously hosted a sketch with popular children’s character Paddington Bear, after her 007 sketch at the London 2012 Olympics.

The adorable moment saw Her Majesty enjoying tea and cake with Paddington, who wished her a ‘happy Jubilee’ and offered her his thanks before the show kicked off. 

Ahead of the Jubilee party, a sweet montage was aired with celebrities paying tribute to Her Majesty as they marked her 70-year reign.

Addressing the Queen, Dolly Parton said: ‘Thank you for being wonderful, you have been a shining diamond in this world for so long and everyone loves you, and I love you.’ 

While Michael Buble added: ‘I’d like to wish Your Majesty and family so much love.’

And Geri Halliwell gushed: ‘Our Queen, kind, loving, strong, serving our country, the Commonwealth, uniting us all together, always putting others before yourself, you are truly inspirational inside and out, we love you.’

In a separate segment, Shirley Ballas paid tribute to the Queen as she sweetly said the monarch was the ‘epitome of girl power’.

‘Seventy years she has served our country, she is the epitome for me of girl power! I think she has got this really cheeky grin all the time and this wonderful demeanour that makes you feel comfortable,’ she said. ‘I’m proud to be British because of her.’

George Ezra also admitted his nerves ahead of taking to the stage for the much-anticipated Jubilee concert.

In an interview ahead of the performance, EastEnders’ Rose Ayling-Ellis reflected on Prince Charlies and Camilla visiting the set of the soap opera.

Rose, who won the 2021 series of Strictly Come Dancing with Giovanni Pernice, revealed that Camilla told her that she and her children all voted for her every week on the show.  

Rose said: ‘The Royal family vote for me, that’s just mad!’ 

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee enters its third day today with the Epsom Derby and Party At The Palace concert, featuring Diana Ross, Sir Rod Stewart, Sam Ryder and more.

They are part of a series of major events scheduled for the four-day extravaganza, which began on Thursday with Trooping the Colour and a jaw-dropping 71-aircraft Flypast.

The celebration will end on Sunday with a special Pageant celebrating the life of the nation’s longest-reigning monarch. 

During Saturday’s concert, Charles and William are preparing to deliver public tributes at the concert to the Queen, who will be watching on television from Windsor.

The evening will also feature appearances from sports figures and stars of the stage and screen.

Sir David Attenborough, Emma Raducanu, David Beckham, Stephen Fry, Dame Julie Andrews, The Royal Ballet and Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds will all make appearances.
