Costa Mesa expected Chargers eventual move

Officials in Costa Mesa, where the Chargers have been practicing since 2017, weren’t blindsided by the team’s announcement of its planned El Segundo facility, Costa Mesa Mayor John Stephens said Monday.

The team’s agreements for a headquarters space and training camp in town were both for 10 years with an option to terminate early, and “we knew that once SoFi (Stadium) opened that they would be looking to locate some place closer” to Inglewood, he said.

The team leases a building near the 405 freeway and Harbor Boulevard and also trains at the Jack R. Hammett Sports Complex near Costa Mesa High School. Stephens said Chargers officials told the city they hope to relocate in 2024, so fans will have two more years to watch the team practice in Orange County.

Having the Chargers in Costa Mesa has been a great experience and Stephens will continue to support the team, he said.

“We get a lot of visitors during training camp and the team itself has been a great community supporter of a lot of different events,” he said. “Costa Mesa has kind of adopted the Chargers as their team.”
